Collection Management Initiative (CMI)

In January of 2000 the Systemwide Library and Scholarly Information Advisory Committee (SLASIAC) endorsed the Collection Management Initiative with two primary components:

  • The appointment of a Standing Committee on Universitywide Library Collection Management Planning (CMPG) with the charge to oversee continuous strategic planning for collection management and advise SLASIAC in this complex area. The details of this charge are embodied in Resolution B: Continuous Strategic Planning for Universitywide Library Collection Management.
  • Research beginning in January 2001 into the significant questions involved in understanding strategies for creating a durable, reliable archive of the integrated print and digital collections and the development and implementation of these strategies. SLASIAC's Resolution A: Archiving of Print Copies of Journals Available in Both Print and Digital Formats details this initiative.

Subsequent to the passage of these resolutions the Collection Management Initiative was funded by the Andrew Mellon Foundation. Research was started on the factors that affect reliance on digital resources and examination of journal content and presentation, user characteristics, access environment, and purpose of use.
