Regional Library Facilities

The University of California maintains two regional library facilities, the Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF) in Richmond and the Southern Regional Library Facility (SRLF) at UCLA. The Berkeley, Davis, San Francisco and Santa Cruz campuses store less frequently needed library materials in all formats, including archival collections and rare books, in the NRLF. The southern UC campuses, including Santa Barbara, Irvine, Riverside, San Diego and UCLA, store little used materials in the SRLF. Selection of materials for storage is at the discretion of the depositing library. Campus libraries may not deposit duplicates of books or journals that are already held in the facility. Multiple copies may not be deposited. All materials deposited must have a machine-readable bibliographic record, must meet UC minimum record standards for monographs and serials, and must be compatible with Melvyl.

The regional library facilities of the University of California:

  • Provide compact storage, security and environmental protection for little used and rare library materials;
  • Ensure access through accurate bibliographic information and location notes for these materials in on-line catalogs
  • Rapidly retrieve materials when requested
  • Offer onsite services to UC faculty, staff and students who wish to use materials housed in the facility.
